A fluid city that slips by under our eyes like the sandali and gondolas along its canals
Venice, a symbiosis of water and stone, Istria stone immaculate or darkened by time.
A symbiosis of water and colour. Surfaces hurt by time and salt.
A nuanced palette of reds and ochres.
Reflections of colours mixing on the water’s greenish surface, images in perpetual movement, fleeting images, moving at the behest of the wind or a passing boat.
Venice is a challenge.
A pearl, fragile like glass, sitting on an immerged forest at the heart of the lagoon.
A mosaic of uncertain balances battling with time.
Venice, a city of art and of treasures.
Treasures to be exhibited, traces of the wealth and the power of noblemen and merchants.
Treasures to be discovered, but only by those who still know how to get lost.
Venice, an infinite labyrinth.
Venice, sacred and profane, devout and libertine.
Venice, Levantine and Byzantine.
Venice, mercenary and courtesan.
An ageless city sacked daily by the present.
Frenetic consumption of what is “beautiful”. No time to see, have to film it, capture it, then carry it away.
Venice at night recovers after the tourists’ and merchants’ obscene racket.
And it is then that it reveals its most wonderful secrets.
Its worrying charm, its ageless visage.
Water lapping against canal-sides, reflections of light, ever-changing like silk and velvet from the Orient.
And I recognise my neighbours from the sound of their steps and voices, coming up from the alleyways, invading summer sleep.
Venice, to moor my heart.
A port from which to cast off, to calm my vagabond heart.
